WHAT IS A PRENATAL MASSAGE?

A prenatal massage is the use of massage therapy to support the physiological, structural, and emotional well-being of a mother-to-be while she goes through some dramatic changes during her pregnancy.

This type of massage relieves a pregnant woman from the many kinds of discomforts experienced during pregnancy, like edema, backaches and headaches, leg cramps and pelvic joint pains.

IS A PRENATAL MASSAGE RECOMMENDED?

A prenatal massage had been used as a therapeutic way of improving the health of both the mom and the child in her womb. It is best, however, to work with a licensed massage therapist whom you are comfortable with, and whom you can trust.

Day Break Massage and Wellness is staffed with certified prenatal massage therapists. Here at Day Break, we ensure your comfort and safety regardless of the type of massage.

BENEFITS OF A PRENATAL MASSAGE

Getting a prenatal massage is beneficial to the well-being of a pregnant woman, and to the child she is carrying.

1. Relieves Common Discomforts

Common discomforts like lower-back and upper-back pains, headaches, leg cramps, stiffness, tension and knots, heartburn and acid reflux, fatigue, varicose veins, nasal congestion and shortness of breath, edema of the lower extremities, neck pain, hip joint pain and constipation are relieved through a prenatal massage.

2. Increases Blood Circulation

A prenatal massage supports the return of blood to the heart and increases blood flow to the uterus and placenta. Thus, helping both the mother and the fetus have a well-maintained immunity.

3. Reduces Stress

Bearing extra weight can be stressful both psychologically and physically. A prenatal massage helps relieve stress for a worry-free pregnancy.

4. Relaxes the Nervous System

A prenatal massage can soothe the nervous system of a person by releasing endorphins through the body. This helps an expectant mother get a good night’s sleep, thus, feeling relaxed and at ease.

5. Maintains Good Posture

A prenatal massage helps muscle tone and increases flexibility adjusting to the bone and muscle alignment of carrying extra weight.

6. Easier Delivery

A prenatal massage prepares a pregnant woman for an easier delivery by relieving stress and relaxation of the nervous system.

PRENATAL MASSAGE TECHNIQUES

There are many kinds of massages, however, a prenatal massage is a special one. The safety and comfort of both the mom and child are taken into consideration.

There are several techniques on how our massage therapists facilitate a prenatal massage:

  • A pregnant woman should be comfortable lying on the massage table. Our therapists are armed with plenty of pillows as the need arises because we always work with an awareness of the special needs of the mother-to-be.
  • Communicate with your therapist. Here at Day Break, we encourage you to talk to us about how you feel. Let us know of any discomforts or medical issues for a proper prenatal massage. Our therapists are there to listen.
  • Use of oil or lotion can be soothing when receiving a massage. Some pregnant moms, however, are sensitive to smell. At Day Break, we offer a wide range of oils and lotions to suit your preference.
  • Prenatal massage is one that specifies extra care, hence, it is best to have one with a prenatal massage certified therapist. Here at Day Break, we have Sara, Melissa and Kahilea to assist you with your prenatal massage needs.
  • If your pregnancy is considered “high risk” it is best to consult your Gynecologist before getting a prenatal massage.
